Stylepark Design Digest

Dear Partners, Clients and Stylepark Friends interested in design, When Cologne announces the imm cologne, there
is a sense of "Oh de Cologne" in the air. Is it a zestful
"Oh" of joy or a dull "Oh" of despair? We
will find out one way or the other. Today, there are at any rate
many harbingers of doom who claim the real trend is being set
in Dubai, Moscow or further East. But Cologne remains Cologne,
even if key novelties tend to get presented in Milan nowadays.
And the imm cologne is now one of those rare places where trends
and concepts for the interiors of today and tomorrow are brought
together in concentrated focus and where everyone meets who works
to create them. For the modern nomad no longer lives permanently
in a single center, but moves within a network of leisurely connections
from one node to the next, forever hunting for the first, fresh
exciting impression - and his colleagues' opinions. To make certain you do not lose sight of the big picture when rushing from one node to the next, Stylepark has compiled a condensed online guide for you for imm cologne. It offers all the most important facts - about the trade fair itself and the program at the Passagen, all the things that must not be missed, even if you only have a day's time. And our small preview of this year's imm cologne highlights are intended as an insightful guide that will help get you to Cologne well informed, knowing where you're headed, and thus all the more relaxed. Enjoy reading our guide and an inspiring visit to Cologne With best wishes from Your Stylepark team

The key attractions at selected manufacturers
01 Cassina | Hall 11.2, Stand G004/H009
![]() |
There's no getting past Cassina. Hardly any other Italian manufacturer still relies so strongly and so successfully on its legendary efforts as the producer of Le Corbusier's classics. But Cassina is far more than Le Corbusier. The collection has always preserved and fostered its eclectic character. Its designers have included such big hitters as Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti, Gaetano Pesce and current stars like Piero Lissoni, Phillippe Starck or Mario Bellini. In Cologne, we can as always look forward to seeing the tried-and-true Cassina products. Which is more than enough. |
02 Cor | Hall 11.3, Stand Q004/R009
![]() |
CUVERT, COSMA, QUANT, JAGO and SEMPER: As of January
2008, five new models and advanced versions are enhancing the collection
marketed by the design-award-winning manufacturer. Needless to say,
they will be on show in Cologne in an exhibition space totaling
600 sq.m.. Seating destined to transform rooms into homely worlds
- created for people who wish to shape their own world, or so Cor's
own motto. The show will hinge on the seating group CUVERT devised
by designers Jehs+Laub, a cube floating on a trapezoidal footprint.
The CUVERT collection also includes colored side tables for sofas
made of acrylic and felt carpets with wool applications. |
03 Création Baumann | Hall 11.2, Stand J025
![]() |
Gecko is the new world novelty from the maker of inspiring textiles. The product is a self-adhering textile that can be stuck to any non-porous surface such as glass, metal, lacquer or plastic thanks to its adhesive rear coat - and removed just as easily. Without residues and auxiliaries, suitable for multiple use and of course available in countless colors and designs. Dotto a textile drape with a perforated pattern creates striking light/shadow contrasts - and serves as the architectural element defining the trade-fair stand. |
04 Draenert | Hall 11.2, Stand H001
![]() |
Together with Poggenpohl, Draenert has developed a Dining Desk. The large work-top, dining table and living-room table made of untreated stone or MDF is a mobile communication center. Thanks to silent motor drives, it offers access to various functions along the longitudinal axis. Stainless steel drawers for hot cooking utensils, as well as a cutlery rack and a cutting board make the preparation of meals a collective experience. And trolleys for additional utensils can be tucked away under the table and brought out as needed. |
05 e15 | Hall 11.2, Stand H010
![]() |
Wood is no longer everything at e15. Alongside the
oak classics, it has recently offered upholstered furniture, too.
And e15 will thus for the first time be getting by almost without
wood at Cologne. The highlight: the new S105 Pardis bed, based on
the SF03 Shiraz sofa system. And tartan collections to fit the bed
and the sofa will also be on display. The Shiraz sofa will be on
show for the first time in leather. But there is some space left
for wood. e15 will thus showcase not only its classic Backenzahn
but also a new table, whose name is still a secret. |
06 Hey-Sign | Hall 11.1, Stand F004
![]() |
The well-known wool-felt manufacturer is fielding
a paravent that definitely will break into the contract market.
The breathable, noise-dampening material offers a new haptic quality
for sober office rooms and its absorbent properties act as a natural
filter to improve the ambient climate - even in private homes. The
entire trade-fair stand is based on the paravent system: arranged
as a zigzag and in wool-white and stone, the 80 by 160cm strips
create a three-dimensional felt setting with a marvelously textured
relief. |
07 Holzmanufaktur | Hall 11.2, Stand I031
![]() |
The name quite manifestly stands for products with the sense of authentic and unfalsified about them. Indeed, the furniture created by Holzmanufaktur combines the natural flair of solid wood with a formal, purist design. With the emphasis on tranquillity, clarity and calmness, the photoshoot for the new product catalog took place in a monastery, and the trade-fair stand likewise tries to convey some of that atmosphere. Where the focus is on concentration, on the quintessentials, as with the furniture on display, designed by Bottega + Ehrhardt Architekten and Homa-Team. |
08 l'abbate | Hall 11.1, Stand C030
![]() |
Udine-based Italian company l'abbate is as yet largely
unknown in Germany. That could and should change, as it has a lot
to offer. Alongside a series of chair classics from design legend
GioPonti the company is now successfully collaborating with younger
offices and designers such as ForUse and Marco Piva. The Cologne
show will present an interesting cross-section of l'abbate's collection. |
09 Lapalma | Hall 11.2, Stand L021/K020
![]() |
Despite being a young company, Italian furniture
maker Lapalma can already look back on a highly successful history.
Founded in 1978, Lapalma swiftly emerged as a first-league player
in Italian design. Prize-winning products such as bar stool Lem
by Tomoko and Shin Azumi were among the best-selling Italian design
products of recent years. At the imm cologne, Lapalma will be showcasing
its Pixel chair by Patrick Norguet, bar stool Kai by Shin Azumi
and the FRAME and RONDO tables by Romano Marcato. All of them being
shown for the first time in Germany. |
10 Ligne Roset | Hall 11.3, Stand M042/N029/M010
![]() |
The French manufacturer is displaying Peter Maly's
asymmetrical Lines series on a trade-fair stand he purpose-created
for the task. Its taut outer skin has a similar texture to the refined
rhythm cross-overs of the side-walls and shelves in his Singular
shelving system. Both feature unusual shapes with their wealth of
different angles. |
11 Marimekko | Hall 11.1, Stand E040
![]() |
The famous Finnish textiles brand has for decades
stood for nonconformity and an individual lifestyle. Thus the new
Maija Louekari patterns foster a colorful ensemble with a marvelously
light touch. The three designs, presented as a wall hangings, tell
a story in pictures: A city silhouette in the dawn's light, the
flying hair of the passers-by rushing past and catkins opening on
the corner of a park, all embedded in large colorful surfaces, ephemeral
urban life. |
12 MDF Italia | Hall 11.2, Stand I010/J019
![]() |
At present, MDF Italia is one of the most dynamic
firms in the Italian furniture market. Not long ago, ownership of
the company changed hands and now the MDF Italia holding company
is headed by influential families and figures such as Umberto Cassina
and Isidoro Fratus, who want to further strengthen the company among
the international competition. MDF Italia already exports to 40
countries and foreign sales make up 75%. |
13 Morgen | Hall 11.1, Stand F041
![]() |
The Frankfurt based company Morgen takes projects from concept to implementation and cultivates a unique approach to life and work. The furniture collection focuses on tomorrows lifestyles the products are meant to be used for living and working. They function as stand-alones but can also be combined and transformed. In Cologne Morgen presents amongst others the shelf system PLAY SHELF. The expandable shelf system is suitable to be used standing on a wall, as a room divider or as a single object. Because of the open shelves the room gains more space. The basic material of PLAY SHELF is solid Douglas fir board. |
14 Piure | Hall 11.2, Stand K019/J018
![]() |
The young Munich-based company, whose team members
include Werner Aisslinger and the German-Dutch designer duo Sonja
Schiefer and Adrian van Hooydonk, has already made a name for itself
with its system furniture. We have good reason to look forward to
the new sideboard range with no handles, Line, and the sofa system
Seven, seven seating elements which you can combine with backrests
however you like. Furniture which is self-confident, beautiful,
pure and homely. |
15 Plank | Hall 11.1, Stand D009
![]() |
Italian furniture company Plank can look back on
a long history of advanced design. Its chair, armchair, bar stool
and table system collections are all highly functional. Countless
Plank products have won awards and are now a firm part of renowned
museum collections world-wide. Such as the Miura bar stool by Konstantin
Grcic. For imm cologne 2008, Plank is presenting Grcic' new Miura folding
table. The entire installation of the trade-fair stand is customized
for flexible use and masterful functionality of this new product. |
16 sdr+ | Hall 11.1, Stand E030
![]() |
Dieter Rams' 606 shelving system has been in production
for 40 years now. And at first sight, the classic reveals no new
properties. Indeed, unthinkable that any addition or further reduction
is possible with the timeless, purist design. Yet an advance has
been made: The furniture system's drawers now come with a new sliding
system. And the 981 container program created by Rams and Thomas
Merkel now includes new drawers of differing heights, thus making
it more flexible. Two classics with the latest technology hidden
away. |
17 Vitra | Hall 11.1, Stand E010
![]() |
The manufacturer, renowned for its seating icons, presents new editions of its design classics: As part of its Home Collection, the Organic Highback and La Fonda by Charles & Ray Eames ae both being showcased, along with the Amoebe Highback armchair by Verner Panton, Greg Lynn's Ravioli Chair and Ottoman, the Slow Chair and Ottoman by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, and Hella Jongerius' The Worker and the associated sofa - as well as Frank Gehry's Wiggle Stool. At the same time, some new accessories will be on show, such as the Eames House Bird and the miniature of the Eames Elephant by Charles & Ray Eames, Le Corbusier's Modulor and his Algue transparent. Mon.-Wed.: 5-6 p.m. happy hour with Kölsch light pale ale. |
18 Woodnotes | Hall 11.1, Stand D020
![]() |
The key product made by Woodnotes is paper string. The company, founded by Finnish designer Ritva Poutila, was the first world-wide to use paper yarn in a modern way for functional textiles for well-designed interiors, simply for its own material and aesthetic sake, and not as a substitute for other materials. The spun paper yarn is used to produce carpets, room dividers, seating, and blinds for the private and contract markets. Especially attractive the simple-look accessories such as bags, table sets and newspaper racks. |
19 Zanotta | Hall 11.1, Stand D004/E003
![]() |
Zanotta can rightly be termed a design legend. Hardly any of the key designers of the century who have not worked for the long-standing company. Zanotta's presentation in Cologne will center on the Delta sofa by Emaf Progetti, which will premiere in Cologne. Zanotta is thus one of the very few major corporations to present novelties at the imm cologne. And praiseworthy it is. |
20 Zeitraum | Hall 11.1, Stand C001
![]() |
The furniture maker only uses solid woods from sustainable
forestry and selects the wood individually for every item, making
each piece of furniture unique in terms of color and grain. The
surfaces are never treated other than with oil or wax. And the restrained
purist design emphasizes the natural surfaces. You immediately notice
that this furniture was designed to last a life-time and age in
dignity. Zeitraum's trade-fair stand is therefore an synaesthetic
experience: the warm brown tones of the various woods are enhanced
by the respective fragrances - and their structure prompts you to
trace their grains with your fingertips. |

Design Post
Since its inauguration three years ago, Design Post Cologne, located in the historical halls of the former parcel post office, present top international collections and cultural events with an outstanding design emphasis all year long. With its architecturally exciting and bright atmosphere, Design Post has established itself as Cologne's "Home of Design" and showcases new design and trends from the fields of living, working, lighting, textiles, and outdoor. Companies are increasingly consciously choosing the Design Post as the venue for their year-round exhibitions. Newcomers this year are Italian company Arper and textile makers Nya Nordiska. In line with the official partnership between imm cologne 2008 and the Netherlands, the Design Post features creative installations and surprising ideas by young Dutch designers such as Bertjan Pot, Ineke Hans or Roderick Vos. As usual, their work will be juxtaposed to the new highlights by the international design elite. Exhibitors at the Design Post: Special tip at Design Post: Italy's famous Moroso company will be presenting some new designs by Patricia Urquiola. Deutz-Mühlheimer-Straße 22a Opening hours Pre-Opening
Spichernhöfe
Ever since their elaborate modernization, the Spichernhöfe in the Belgian Quarter have been one of Cologne's key design zones and event centers. The former paper factory and book-printing complex is now the site for the vibrant tradition of commerce, craftsmanship and middle-class residences - in a new urban and representative idiom. The courtyards and lofts, not to mention on the 10,000 sq.m. large piazza in the middle of the seven buildings (some of them from the turn of the 20th century), form an extraordinary setting for life and work with a post-industrial flair. As year-round tenants B&B Italia (since January
2008), Boffi and Tobias Grau both operate flagship stores in the
Spichernhöfe. Architektur & Wohnen, daab, five eyes, Foscarini, Guzzini, Jil Sander, Spagnesi, Merten, Nube Italia, Skoda, Tai Ping, Tisettanta, Walter Knoll, Wendel, XYMARA. Spichernstraße 8 Opening hours Cocktail
Tom Dixon - A&W Designer of the Year | Spichernhöfe
Directly behind the Spichernhöfe you will find a show organized by magazine Architektur&Wohnen and dedicated to its "Designer of the Year", Britain's Tom Dixon. The famed industrial designer, who started his career by welding together found objects on the stage of a London night club, himself devised the show, which presents well and lesser-well known products by this nonconformist mind, all of which stem from his courageous wish to produce great designs for everyman. Entrance Opening hours
"Es werde Strom" - Merten + HfG Karlsruhe | Spichernhöfe
"What happens to the electricity from the socket in the wall, what alternatives to the customary switches are there?" These are among the questions which the Merten corporation from Wiehl asked 16 students at Karlsruhe's renowned Academy of Design. The result: a superlative pool of new ideas featuring ceiling-based sockets, faucet dimmers, switches for children, interactive LED luminaires and illuminated keyholes - all displayed in an astonishing and imaginative show that entices you to try things out for yourself. At the academy, the project was mentored by Volker Albus and Sven Voelker. Access Opening hours Cocktail
Vulkan Gelände
Following the complete overhaul and modernization of the former Vulkan Complex in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district, several designers, bespoke tailors and companies from the media industry have relocated here. Since the restoration work, the complex with its original brick facades has swiftly emerged as a creative center. During imm cologne 2008, the following companies will be exhibiting there: dualutions GmbH, Dyson, eco e.V., Lichterfeld, Lichtuhr GmbH and Material Connexion. Renowned New York materials library Material Connexion
has its permanent showroom in the Vulkan complex, and will be
presenting its "Materials for Future Living" exhibition
- a special show with innovative materials and sample applications.
Manufacturers such as Twentinox, Royal Mosa, ThyssenKrupp, Nirosta
and Alcan Composites will be displaying their latest innovations;
designer Frank Person presents new furniture designs, highlighting
the inexhaustible possible applications of new materials for interiors. Lichtstraße 43 corner of Oskar-Jäger
Straße
Mike Meiré | FACTORY
Mike Meiré's Cologne factory is located not far from the Vulkan complex. He is one of Germany's busiest design border crossers. As part of the Dornbracht Culture Projects, the first collection of spatial sounds on ritual bathroom architecture will be on display here during the imm cologne. The soundscapes reflect the relationship between space, materiality and movement within the architectures for ritual uses MEM, TARA LOGIC and ELEMENTAL SPA. The range was initially presented as part of a Sound Spa, and at Meiré's design factory. FACTORY Opening hours
SIDI Spot
Last year, SIDI Spot was first at hand for the
imm cologne - and immediately became a favorite among visitors. SIDI is
a company promoting Spanish design and also a platform for interaction
between manufacturers, designers, planners, users and specialist
retailers. The following companies will be represented at
SIDI Spot this year: Marzellenstraße 43a (close to the main railway
station and Cologne Cathedral) Opening hours Cocktail
Pesch interior design store
A key address during the imm cologne and the Passagen is the Pesch interior design store. There, renowned companies will be exclusively presenting their products in impressive installations. The traditional Tuesday reception over cocktails has become an almost family-like annual get-together with many celebrities. Companies exhibiting exclusively at Pesch during
the imm cologne: Alessi, Cap Design, Daff (Domestic Affairs), Foscarini,
Poltrona Frau, Team by Wellis. At the Pesch Wohnshop: exklusiv Frigerio und Porro,
des Weiteren Brühl, Moroso, Ventura.
Especially worth seeing are Marc Sadler's luminaires, which he designed as a spacious installation for Foscarini for the commercial market. In the eye of the stairwell in the main building, steles made of superimposed Mite luminaires stand tall, running to a height of five meters - a bizarre garden of pillars of somehow futuristic steles.
Another highlight is the presentation of the extended Stripes cupboard system made by Schönbuch and designed by duo Jehs + Laub. The cupboard system won the imm cologne 2007 interior innovations award "best of best" and has now been supplemented to include new elements and functions. Main building: Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring 22 Opening hours Cocktail Auction Design tour of the building by Dieter Pesch
Nils Holger Moormann at the MAK
An imm cologne without Nils Holger Moormann is virtually unimaginable. After having withdrawn from the trade fair itself and, last year, making a guest appearance at Stylepark in Residence with the Walden garden house, the lateral thinker from Aschau has now surprised everyone with his next coup. Under the heading "Viewing today, no selling," 42 items of brand furniture by Moormann are on show at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Art). Whereas last year we were able to view Walden in the Kunstverein's gardens, this time we can wonder at the move inside a museum. We are looking forward to it! Museum für Angewandte Kunst Opening hours
Extra Gallery Tips 01 designer's gallery: Johanna Grawunder - I'm bringing sexy back
Gabrielle Ammann's designer's gallery is definitely
worth an extra visit. Here, visitors will be greeted by masterpieces
and one-off creations by renowned international designers. Teutoburgerstraße 27 Opening hours Cocktail
02 Gallery Ulrich Fiedler: ON/OFF
With the show ON/OFF, Gallery Ulrich Fiedler is likewise showcasing premiere lighting and luminaire design. On display is a selection of modern luminaire designs from the 1920s to the 1980s. The items stem from the hand of major designers such as Angelo Lelli, Gabriele d'Ali, Fabio Lenci, Vico Magistretti, Studio Rossi-Molinari and the perhaps most innovative of Italian designers of "lighting apparatuses", namely Gino Sarfatti. Lindenstraße 19 Opening hours
03 Gallery Edith
As the icing on the cake, and a true must, we recommend a visit to Galerie Edith - a fresh and extraordinary design gallery, new not only for Cologne. Edith does not have any permanent collections,
but instead presents a quite unique mix of contemporary design
and individual vintage items. Her home is her stage: The individual
furniture items, luminaires and accessories are presented in her
apartment and stem from her sorties through shops, galleries,
trade fairs and boutiques in Antwerp, Paris and New York. Sachsenring 59 Opening hours
Last but not least we would recommend visiting the "Golden Egg" in Düsseldorf: At the Fritz Hansen Showroom in Düsseldorf's media harbor, the Danish company is presenting its classics and novelties: The highpoint in January is the limited re-edition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Arne Jacobsen's Egg Chair. Even if traveling to Düsseldorf is often a no-no for ardent inhabitants of Cologne, the trip is really worthwhile. Alte Mälzerei |
