Montenegrin stone meets French charm
Jun 13, 2016

Not just the buildings with their solid stone brickwork and narrow windows with wooden shutters, the surrounding countryside also has something of a French feel to it. The small, village-like “Malo Selo” hotel complex is, however, in Montenegro, not far from the Adriatic Sea and Dubrovnik. The current owners were so taken with the soft, rolling hills, the palm, olive and orange trees, and the proximity to the coast that they decided to restore some of the abandoned natural stone ruins and make the ensemble into a hotel complex comprising ten buildings.

Although the architecture is very much in-keeping with local tradition, a certain French influence can definitely be felt here. This is because the 15 apartments were fitted out in close collaboration with the planning department at Ligne Roset. The suite in the building that also houses the hotel reception welcomes guests, for example, with the “Togo” sofa, a design classic from Ligne Roset’s 1970s range, which like only a handful of other designs stands for a revolution in the discipline. Back then, prim, conservative furniture was superseded by low sofas and armchairs with a relaxed look and feel, and by light furniture that reflected the unconventional lifestyle of the younger generation. “Togo” is no less inviting or casual today than it was then, and as such it fits in perfectly with a vacation destination that promises not only carefree days in the sun; but also relaxed evenings by the fireplace.

The interior design of the individual suites boasts an appealing contrast between simple rooms with stone floors, un-plastered walls or colored plaster surfaces, and sculptural furniture by designers such as Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec or Philippe Nigro from the multi-faceted Ligne Roset range. In “Malo Selo” great importance was placed on furnishing each suite in a highly distinctive style. The at all times elegant – and as such French – simplicity of all of the complex’s rooms corresponds with the character of an inviting vacation home, in which to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle in the summer months. With this delightful project Ligne Roset has once again proved its expertise with regard to hotel interiors. (rw)

Every room was individually designed, with no fear of bold colors: The “Prado” sofa by Christian Werner and the “Ottoman” armchair by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, both Ligne Roset, are a bright sunny yellow. Photo © Ligne Roset
