New Year's Eve party in Helsinki

The kick-off event for Helsinki as design capital will be the New Year's Eve of Design on Dec. 31, 2011 – running of course thru to January 1, 2012. It'll be well worth attending, as countless local and international events will launch all over the city to mark the occasion. So here's to a design-full New Year!

Coal, bunkers, mountains, art

They came to international fame with the "Null Stern Hotel", and twin Frank and Patrik Riklin are now devoting themselves to a new task for which no one otherwise really feels responsible. They're inviting people to attend their "Studio for Special Tasks", to an artistic intervention in public space. The event will take place on December 14 as part of the series of events entitled "Coal, bunkers, mountains" in the new rooms of the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences.

During its theme evening on "Brand cult/Cult brands" as of 8.15 p.m. on December 13, culture channel Arte will focus on brands with documentaries on "Apple – Das Coolness-Diktat" and "Ikea – Ein Möbelhaus erobert die Welt"

Door by door: German architecture in Poland

Gropius, Poelzig and Mendelsohn in Poland? Few now remember that these famous 20th-century architects also designed timeless building in neighboring Poland. As part of the "Door by door. Poland – Germany. 1,000 years of art and history" show opening at the Martin Gropius Building in Berlin, on December 12 Małgorzata Omilanowska will lecture on Modernist architecture in Poland.
