Product description

In the Asian delicatessen Tampopo in Amsterdam’s Haarlemmerdijk, visitors are stimulated to browse around, find new things, try them out and eat. This is why the shop favours products that are colourful and look enticing. They stand out even better because the shop’s interior is decorated with white Mosa tiles. And an unusual feature in this respect is the use of rounded corner tiles. These suit the idea of delicious food better than sharp edges. The Tampopo formula has two backgrounds. On the one hand, the shop caters to the trend for Asian Fusion cooking and eating, while on the other hand it fills a gap between the Dutch supermarket and the Chinese speciality food store. “Big supermarkets neglect the market for Asian food,” explains shop manager Willy Demacker. “Maybe they’ll have two packs of Patak’s on special offer and a rack of the familiar Conimex products. Consumers who want something a bit special have to go to speciality shops for this but these have three disadvantages. Firstly, they are often small shops that are so packed with products that you can’t see the wood for the trees. Secondly, they tend to have a rather shabby appearance with large bins where everyone rummages around with their hands. And thirdly, communication is often difficult because the shopkeepers usually don’t speak Dutch.”
