Product description

Thonet has developed a chair as an addition to its successful S 840 chair programme that, thanks to its generous dimensions, is an elegant and comfortable place to relax, and ideal for the home or for contract use. A stool, specially designed to match the shape of the chair, adds to the comfort. The key feature of the entire programme is the perfectly balanced interplay between supporting lines and the surrounding surfaces. It exudes a warm, lively appeal that is further enhanced by Thonet’s typical use of elegant wood in association with metal and high quality cover fabrics as the materials. Thanks to the characteristic seat shell and beautifully shaped steel tube frame, the chair develops a unique and very special effect.

The premium aesthetics of the programme exist in the accentuated constructive separation of the frame and seat shell. The moulded wood seat shell exhibits formal analogies to automobile design in the surface blanking, where this process is used in chassis production – transferred, however, to the material wood at Thonet. The result is a clear, elegant silhouette. The seat element consists of moulded plywood; through the use of different exotic wood veneers and coverings, the character of the programme can be varied and adjusted to any furnishing environment. The frames are available in high-quality chrome plated tubular steel.

The activist

In the 1930s, Charlotte Perriand was convinced that it was necessary to fight for a better future. Not only did she strive for new forms in design, but she also sought to improve social conditions through design and architecture. She employed large photo collages on which she had applied layers of writing to communicate her political and social messages. The Museum of Design in Zurich is now holding an exhibition dedicated to these works.
