Eames Storage Unit ESU Bookcase

In 1949, Charles and Ray Eames developed the Eames Storage Unit, an innovative system of freestanding shelves. Similar to the simultaneously constructed Eames House, the ESU adheres to the principles of industrial production, yet its high-quality materials and varied colour scheme make it an attractive piece for the home. In collaboration with the Eames Office and Dutch designer Hella Jongerius, a carefully defined new colour concept was chosen to give the ESU a fresh and contemporary look while still celebrating the spirit of the 1940s and ’50s. The Eames Desk Unit (EDU) is also available with this new colour scheme. Along with the introduction of additional versions, which make the ESU into a veritable shelving system, the new Eames Storage Unit features modified horizontal dimensions: the shelf has been widened to enlarge the size of individual compart-ments. The ESU is also produced in various heights, from a sideboard to a high bookshelf. The dimensions of the ESU Bookcase remain unchanged.
