Product description
Open communicative offices should always incorporate a spatial solution for phases of concentrated work and privacy. Usually this "Nesting" means retreating to a separate location to find peace and quiet.
With the development of the new office furniture system Playns, Vitra has teamed up with Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec in pursuit of an alternative. The change of location - and hence retreat - occurs by simply adjusting the height of the individual desk surfaces, which is effected quickly and easily with the press of a button.
A person seated at their desk sends out different signals than someone who is standing. Shielded off by the protective screens, a person sitting down in the Playns system lets others know he or she is concentrating on a task and does not want to be disturbed. Those wishing to address a person in a seated position have to cross a higher threshold than when approaching someone who is standing and obviously ready for communication. For it is easier to have a discussion when standing: Individuals can come together at a desk, circulate around it, jointly review documents and plans and engage in exchanges with colleagues over the level of the partition screens. For discussions conducted while standing, multiple display monitors can be brought in - a situation that otherwise has to be organized in a separate conference setting, which takes time to plan and coordinate. With all these factors, Playns contributes to higher productivity.
Playns makes Nesting possible without having to leave one's own workstation. The height of the desk clearly indicates who wishes to communicate and who does not want to be disturbed. Playns facilitates Netting and Nesting in a vertical dimension, at one and the same workstation, and so gives the users even more freedom - in combination with the other Nesting zones - to tailor the manner in which they work to their own needs.
Being able to switch between sitting and standing while at work is healthy: A balanced mix of sitting, standing and movement not only reduces back problems and tension. It also promotes blood flow, circulation and thus activity and motivation.
The Playns workstations can be grouped in islands of different size as best reflects the needs of an organisation. Equipped with a central power supply channel that feeds each workstation, the construction is so stable that two desks vis-à-vis from one another are supported by a total of four inwardly angled legs. In addition, Playns provides space for storing work documents and personal effects. Clearly articulating privacy and protection, the rounded screens in two sizes define an individual work environment for each workstation and allow both Netting and Nesting with the interplay of the different desk heights.

More than the sum of little houses
Expectations were very high when Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to build the domicile for Vitra's Home Collection in Weil am Rhein. The VitraHaus has now been completed and it is astonishing. The array of houses stacked one on top of the other is much more than just the sum of little houses.
