Again and again, wrack proves to be a constant source of inspiration. Washed-out color, shapes rounded by the force of the water, coincidental combinations of the most diverse materials – there’s almost always a surprise waiting to be discovered. While strolling along the Øygarden beach near Bergen Lars Beller gathered impressions from the objects he saw there, which he later drew inspiration from when designing the “Drifted” stool. Reduced to the essential in its form, the lines and surfaces display organic curves and slight arches. The two materials used here, cork for the seat and ash for the base, may be similar in their light color, but they form a stark contrast in texture and surface feel: soft, pliable and warm meets hard, robust and cool.
“Drifted” is manufactured by “Discipline”. The young Italian label was founded by Renato Preti, former director at Skitsch. With a concentration on basic functions, simple forms and natural materials, 14 design offices from ten different countries have joined forces to design their first collaborative collection of tables, chairs, luminaires and accessories. The word “lightness” would best describe the overall impression given by the works. “CipCup”, a side table by Ichiro Iwasaki, is made of blown glass and remains barely visible within the room, the “Kami” table by Claesson Koivisto Rune is made of bamboo and looks like a folded sheet of paper, while the polished metal surfaces of the “Roule” tray by Pauline Deltour reflect its surroundings.
Discipline’s first campaign has been designed by Sarah Illenberger. During her Graphic Design degree at Central Saint Martins College in London, she discovered her passion for handcrafted 3D illustrations. Here, she implements Discipline’s motto “Beautifully design, consciously made” with the help of chopped-up fruit and vegetables. On the outside the produce looks just as one would expect, but on the inside they are filled with the same materials as the “Discipline” furniture: The banana is made of wood, the eggplant of bamboo, the avocado has a glass stone and the melon is filled with cork. (The motifs are also available to buy as lithographs in Sarah Illenberger’s shop.)
