Integrated Urbanism Dialogues
How to strike the right balance between high and low-tech? How can the population influence urban developments? What can we learn from traditional building methods? These and other questions will be discussed at the "Integrated Urbanism Dialogues I" symposium in Stuttgart from December 7-8 by leading theorists and practitioners – in light of the soaring population growth in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
Nurturing things over Christmas
On "Nurturing Things Day" on December 11 between 3-5 p.m. at Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge in Berlin, whoever has a preference for special everyday objects can, in exchange for a donation of a sum that he or she chooses, assume symbolic patronage for objects from the museum's collection. On offer: busts of famous persons, ad figures, furniture and even household appliances. Museum staff will be at hand to provide hands-on personal advice.
Nature has been the role model for designers, architects, artists, engineers and even musicians. It offers an inexhaustible stock of patterns and structures. These sources of inspiration will be exhibited at "Form follows Nature", from Dec. 13, 2011 – Jan. 26, 2012 – at Architekturforum Aedes in Berlin. The exhibits: models, images, projections and sounds.
A selection of bizarre, sarcastic, critical, loving and witting counter-projects on the classic image of the Christmas tree is to be viewed at the 8th Christmas Tree show, "Oh Tannenbaum", on Dec. 16-21, 2011 at Karlsruhe's Academy of Design – artists and designers have contributed their own particular visual takes on this highly symbolic icon.
Alexander McQueen's inspirations
He linked fashion with technology, the natural sciences and art history, interwove historical and contemporary cuts and materials, thus creating grotesque and elegant robes. Hamburg's Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe is devoting a show to British fashion maker and head of design for the haute couture label of Givenchy, Alexander McQueen. The exhibition "Alexander McQueen Inspirations. Fashion Design" will run from Dec. 23, 2011 thru May 6, 2012 and presents about 30 models from his final collections posthumously, along with selected designs by others and a range of historical clothes.
