Not becoming invisible but rendering visible
19 March 2010
Since time immemorial, people have been using light to define a location. As beacons, as navigation lights, or as danger signals. Light marks positions. And does so not only in the real spatial sense but also metaphorically because, beyond the physical phenomenon, we see light as a medium for conveying content - both information and emotions. Designing with light offers immeasurable scope for creativity; in the final analysis, the planning process amounts to defining a viewpoint or a position and how to achieve it. Erco consistently taps that vast potential with its modular lighting and luminaire systems. Back in 2006, architectural lighting was already at a technological crossroads: with the development of new light sources and optics that could be combined with innovative technologies for controlling light digitally. Since then, the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) light management system has been linking the relevant luminaires to networks, enabling them to be addressed or grouped individually irrespective of the structure of the power supply. Erco calls this future-oriented concept "tune the light". "tune the light" - this motto expresses the company's ongoing attempt to optimize architectural lighting solutions. In this context, Erco understands innovation to mean the transformation of technology into culture. It is an approach - that is also reflected in Quintessence, the new range of recessed luminaires, present at the next Light+Building 2010 - which ensures that those in charge never lose sight of their objective, namely to offer users lighting tools that comply with all the technical and budget-related requirements on site while, at the same time, exploiting the fascination and magic of this "insubstantial building material".
