The overall concept of Orbital stems from an appraisal of the way light from a bulb can be softened. Traditionally this is accomplished by using a translucent layer surrounding the bulb, or alternatively by reflecting the light off an opaque surface such that the original light source is not directly visible. Orbital instead uses internal reflection and refraction to accomplish this diffusion. Using three layers of hand-blown glass around the bulb causes the light to be reflected and refracted several times before it emerges, spreading it further and reducing the apparent glare.
