It’s showtime. For The Design Annual 2008 we have consciously chosen a very exciting theme which will generate controversial discussion. The two artists Tobias Rehberger and Claus Richter are responsible for the spatial concept. Together they will develop a diverse and multi-functional environment in the Festhalle. Here are the first impressions of Claus Richter’s studio.

To come straight out with it: Visiting the ICFF in New York is not necessarily a must for design enthusiasts. The trade fair, and it happens a month after the Milan furniture salon, presents neither new products nor interesting new developments.

In 2003 the Kram/Weisshaar office (the one an IT experts, the other a product designer) joined up with Stylepark on a project: a table was designed using a special software. The designers developed the software which, under certain parameters, generates a model of the Breeding Table, or rather the patterns for a CNC mill that then makes the table.

And they’re off. Building started this Monday. This kicked off the countdown to our event The Design Annual. From Friday, July 4 until Monday, July 7, 2008, the showcase for high-end design will take place for the third time in the Festhalle in Frankfurt. And this time the motto is: it’s showtime!
Tobias Rehberger and Claus Richter will be giving visual form to the theme.

Scuola Politecnica di Design SPD in Milan is offering four workshops this summer – with outstanding designers. From June 27 – July 24, 2008 as part of the Deep Design Summer School there will be one-week courses run by Ross Lovegrove, Fernando und Humberto Campana, Matali Crasset and Martí Guixé. Summer School: swapping experiences and exploring the limits of your imagination. Fully in keeping with the motto “Go deeper into contemporary design”.

Mobility and flexibility are qualities which we generally need nowadays to get through life successfully. Especially when we are young, we value not pinning ourselves down and remaining as independent as possible. We are all too happy to travel back and forth like nomads between a job in one city, a relationship in another, and friends all over the world. Thus, we are constantly in motion, be it mentally, physically or socially.

What initially still looks like Design Mai Youngsters, has changed its name. From this year it will be called Daily, Monthly, Yearly (DMY). This year, the established format for young design is opening up its frontiers with the “Allstars.” From May 21 until 25, the main players in the international design scene will meet at the DMY.

A collection of the culture of design and daily life in the 20th century
Living, pulsating, close to people’s hearts – in an old, rustic factory building the “Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge” has found a new home in Berlin Kreuzberg, after years of wandering. The exhibition currently on show is entitled “Kampf der Dinge” (“Struggle between things”) and marks the 100th anniversary of the German Werkbund.

From May 17 through 20, 2008 the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) is being held in the Jacob K Javits Center in New York. In the international design calendar the ICFF plays a minor role, but it takes place in the Big Apple, which is where Europeans particularly like to meet, especially in the sonny month of May.

There are two sides to Häberli’s cartoons: the daytime idyll and the nighttime adventure. The fluorescent elements on the curtain fabric “Village” start to glow when it gets dark. They are invisible during the day.

Peter Greenaway’s multimedia dinner at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2008 in Milan

Leonardo da Vinci’s very fragile “Last Supper”, painted in egg tempera on a wall of the refectory of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is the pride and joy of Milan. So after the typical arguments, concerned for the safety of the carefully and arduously restored mural, the City of Milan decided to not grant director Peter Greenaway permission to himself realize his cineastic project relating to the “Cenacolo” at the original location.
