The very essence of sterotypical middle-class decor, the object as a mask, a technological jack-in-the-box. These are the ingredients of this esplosive cocktail created by Starck, in his most brilliant design phase, from the emotion conveyed to him by the

sight of battered old armchairs abandoned on the streets of bourgeois areas of Paris. He gives this item new life, presenting it as a gift to President Mitterand for the Reading room of his private apartment at the Elysée. Starck at his most radical, for

the first time industrially produced.
