Vieles wurde in den letzten Jahrzehnten weiterentwickelt und verbessert. Beton, neben Stahl der Werkstoff der Moderne, fand Einsatz in der filigranen Architektur der fünfziger und der brutalistischen der sechziger Jahre, in minimalistischen Entwürfen ebenso wie in gigantischen Staudämmen oder Brücken von unvorstellbarer Spannweite. Dabei wären die meisten Projekte ohne Beton nie zu realisieren gewesen. So wurde Beton stets als Baustoffwunder gefeiert, zugleich aber ästhetisch kritisiert.
