Born in Tokyo in 1977, Jun Yasumoto graduated from ENSCI – Les Ateliers in 2001. He lives in Paris, where he works for a range of clients (Marcel By, Jacob Delafon…). Since 2002 he has also worked on a freelance basis for the Paris office of Jasper Morrison, for whom he has worked on a range of projects for Alessi, Cappellini, Flos, Magis, Muji and Vitra.
Evocative of the round eye of the night owl which pierces the darkness, the circular shade/reflector/diffuser of the Owl light may be turned and freely positioned around the light source, a simple compact fluo bulb.
This rotation enables the light reflected from the bulb to be modulated, directed, and softened by the other side of the disc, pivoting around the light source rather than confining it.
The weighted base in white lacquered steel is of deliberately minimalist construction, thus concentrating all attention on the white cotton reflector/diffuser which produces a soft, warm lighting ambiance.
“Noting that lampshade fabric is rarely used in contemporary lighting, despite its very evident atmospheric qualities, I asked myself how this fabric might be used other than in the traditional manner.” Mission accomplished.
