For his new settee for Ligne Roset, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance
has successfully executed a brilliant styling exercise on a classic
base, resulting in a very strong personality, with unique elegance
and incomparable appeal.
The Sintra settee is anchored to the ground by a base in natural (or
anthracite-stained) solid oak, the sophisticated lines of which are
shaped three-dimensionally. The warmth and reassuring solidity
of the solid wood are lightened by the sculptural treatment which
refines it. Furthermore, a reinforcing crossmember in mechanically-
soldered steel, concealed beneath the seat, avoids the inconvenience
of a central supporting leg, which would certainly have
otherwise been required to support the generous 248 cm width of
the large settee. Thus the Sintra seating, although firmly anchored
to the ground, still manages to remain airy.
The integral seat offers a vast space in which to relax, further
amplified by its double hammer-head shaped cut. A clever central
seam brings a visual suggestion of welcome whilst effectively
maintaining the tension of the covering material
The line of the backrest continues into the armrests, creating an
enveloping corolla for the user. The flowing curves thus described
are subtly enhanced by the broad range of types of finishing
stitch employed - simple stitching, bourrelet or baguette stitch,
twin needle stitch – evidencing the high level of skill required in
their creation. The shaped armrests split the cut-off corners into
multiple facets, tracing out shapes which are as attractive to the
eye as they are welcoming to weary arms.
A natural refinement for Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, who in three dimensions with great spontaneity, the Sintra settee always remains
elegant whether viewed from the front, the side, in three-quarter
profile, or from behind.
Thus the vertical seam at each rear corner of the settee extends
the line of the solid oak base with precision in a straight, then
Lastly, the goose feather-filled back cushions bring the final touch
of comfort to a settee which allies rigour with softness like no
