The extruded ellipsoidal aluminum blinds, featuring three different anodized color coatings and surrounding the rectangular new library building in the southern German town of Dusslingen, open up like the pages of a book. In summer, the automatically controlled blinds protect users from direct sunlight, while during the winter months the lamellas can be positioned such as to admit maximum daylight and thus enable solar radiation to be used to generate additional heat. Depending on the season, energy costs can be reduced through cooling or heating loads, respectively.
