“Nothing good happens unless you make it happen,” were the wise words of Erich Kästner with which Heiner Oberrauch brought his speech to a close. The CEO and owner of Salewa also thanked those responsible for certifying the new head office in Bolzano with the “Work&Life” distinction. The energy agency KlimaHaus Agentur awarded the distinction for the overall concept used for the new head office of the mountaineering equipment manufacturers. In fact, the distinction is only awarded if a series of technical and strategic criteria are met in the three areas of sustainability, namely nature, life and transparency. Thus, the CO2-neutral building generates double as much electricity on its roof-tops as it itself consumes. Or, by way of another example, the canteen prepares all meals only using healthy foodstuffs from the region. Indeed, attention was paid when constructing the building to awarding contracts to local firms wherever possible. As a consequence, 90 percent of the suppliers were from the vicinity, something that minimized emissions caused by haulage.

Office buildings consume an immense amount of electricity to power internal illumination. Together with the renowned international specialists at Zumtobel, an ingenious and holistic lighting concept was therefore developed to optimize the building’s energy balance in this regard. During sunshine, the office and exhibition rooms are not covered by shades, as this way energy consumption for artificial lighting is minimized. In addition, many staff members like having a free view of the outside world, something that appreciably increases the energy required for cooling. For the Salewa head office, the winter input from solar radiation was in part “sacrificed”, as the majority of the office rooms view northwards. Moreover, the central control system and efficient illumination of the Salewa offices ensure prime comfort levels. Staff also expressed a desire for steady lighting conditions in the interior irrespective of how bright it is outside. To meet this requirement, the architects at Park Associati teamed up with Zumtobel to develop the “Ibla” dimmable luminaires. “Ibla” provide not only indirect floodlighting for ceilings, but direct light for computer workstations and thus guarantees ideal lighting conditions without any dazzle. The special folded mineral materials used create a luminaire that corresponds in shape to the building itself. The meeting rooms boast discrete visual in-built luminaires that enable variable lighting settings depending on the room’s momentary use, such as a meeting or video presentations. Thanks to the even diffusion of light, the rooms have a bright and friendly feel to them.

It is not just the balanced interaction of architecture and light that makes the building such a visitor magnet, but also the fact that it houses Italy’s largest artificial climbing wall – the hall boasts 2,000 square meters of climbing walls with over 90 different routes and is well worth a visit.
