Hotel
Velvet and leather

It is no easy task finding a relaxed and quiet haven in Paris’ bustling 2nd arrondissement. The boutique hotel chain The Hoxton took on the challenge and has created a charming guest house in the vibrant Sentier district.

At one time a fabric factory was housed in the large 18th-century townhouse designed by architect Nicolas d’Orbay. The magnificent facade, rustic exposed timber beams and two striking spiral staircases have survived from the original building. In designing the rooms architect Emil Humbert and interior designer Christophe Poyet whose studio goes by the name of Humbert & Poyet, sought to create “relaxed luxury”.

While a design by Soho House in the winter garden with its marble mosaic, opulent velvet sofas along with fringed borders nestle alongside small mid-century side tables, there is a more contemporary feel in the 172 rooms over five floors where guests are offered a modern interpretation of the building’s historic roots: “We adapted the design to this antique building by retaining classic architectural codes that we contrast with industrial elements,” explain Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet. Specifically, free-standing bathtubs, wooden paneling and fishbone parquet contrast with accents in bronze, perforated metal panels as room dividers and leather headrests.

With this cozy combination the duo has managed to retain the charm of a bygone era while giving it a fresh modern feel. The playful color spectrum of the furniture in public areas such as the lobby is referenced in the rooms using blue, green, red and orange shades for fabric and wall colors whereby the effect is softened through the use of clear graphics. Guests’ culinary wishes are met by Rivié, a charming brasserie complete with courtyard. Afterwards guests can choose whether to spend the rest of the evening in the Planche wine bar with its echoes of Art Déco days or in the lavishly styled Jacque’s Bar, whose interior with a colorful mix of floral and opulent elements was inspired by the orient painting of artist Jacques Majorelle. There is a sense of culture and calmness in every aspect of the The Hoxton Paris: Rather than a fitness studio and spa the hotel puts the focus on readings and workshops. And the hotel is ideally located for a city trip: Notre-Dame cathedral is just two kilometers away and there is an attractive view of the Eiffel Tower from the rooms on the top floor.
