Objects with potential
On the gravity of tradition, hybrid furniture items and updatable design: in conversation with Thomas Wagner Mike Meiré explains what he feels is most important when repositioning long-standing corporation Flötotto.
At Orgatec 2012 Flötotto will present new designs from Konstantin Grcic’s successful PRO chair series, which was launched at the beginning of this year. After only eight months, the program has been extended with a 4-star aluminium pedestal base swivel chair fitted with glides. Flötotto will also show a matching new indoor and outdoor bistro table, available with a round or a rectangular tabletop. The new designs come in black, white, red and polished aluminium. The new model with armrests will provide even more comfort since it comes with wider armrests developed for the new aluminium swivel chair mode. The chair’s innovative seat shell is designed to support the user’s freedom of movement by allowing various sitting positions. Due to its superb functionality and aesthetics, the PRO program is not only ideal for schools and other educational environments but is also equally well suited for use in private and other contract interiors.
Flötotto has been working intensively on the features and detailing of the existing models in the PRO product family: all seat shells are also available with padding and a new row connector has been developed for the sled base model. Since fire safety is an important issue in public buildings, Flötotto also offers flame resistant seat shells and padding. The flame resistant PRO model is treated with additives and is tested and approved according to DIN4102-1, class B1.
Only a few months after its launch, the PRO collection now offers a wide range of different designs. This great flexibility allows for use in various environments ranging from private living rooms to auditorium seating. PRO chairs can be used in children’s rooms and educational institutions, in staff restaurants and cafés and in conference rooms. The market has responded very well to the PRO launch, as first reference projects such as the Munich-based Residenz-Theater and the Hamburg student union confirm.
The unique selling point of the PRO series is its outstanding comfort based on three main aspects: firstly, the round seat is formed similar to that of a stool and therefore does not force the body forwards. Secondly, the slim backrest allows the torso to move sideways. The third and most decisive aspect is the distinct S-shape of the backrest: the lower curve allows freedom of movement and takes strain away from the lower back and the pelvis. The three-dimensional shape provides structural stability, thus making it possible to produce the plastic shell without using fibreglass for reinforcement. The backwards bend of the upper part of the backrest encourages frequent change of sitting positions and also provides the option of sitting in a straddling position.
