Iceland and Architecture?

Iceland, once Europe's richest country in per capita terms, saw its economy suddenly collapse overnight. Nevertheless there are many hopes for this country with its unusual architecture. The "Iceland and Architecture?" exhibition that runs from Oct. 1 to Nov. 13 at Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt/Main will be displaying photographs by Gudmundur Ingólfsson and a festival documentary film by British director Henry Bateman.

Architecture Film Festival

"Think big, act small" is the motto of the 6th edition of the Architecture Film Festival in Rotterdam, which takes place on Oct. 6-9 and covers a range of over 100 films, from documentaries via art films to animations.

Frankfurter Book Fair

Is Facebook a book? From Oct. 12-15, the world's largest book fair will be highlighting the interaction of the analogue and digital media and showing how digitalization is impacting on creation, production, marketing, and even content. Taking as its motto "Fabulous Iceland", it will showcase Icelandic literature and present a highly diverse program of art, film, music and, of course, countless readings by authors. In fact, the Frankfurt Book Fair will feature 7,300 exhibitors from one hundred different countries, 299,000 visitors and about 10,000 journalists.

Specialist convention on the city of tomorrow

Will urban life soon be green and healthy? The trend toward urbanization calls for strategies and concepts for health-promoting and sustainable design. The specialist convention on "City of Tomorrow: Green and healthy" is meant to drive a transdisciplinary science culture that straddles the humanities and environmental sciences, urban planning and spatial zoning, and economics. It will be held on Oct. 13 in Hamburg; optionally, there are events on the prior evening, too. Registrations deadline is Sept. 29.

Design with the Other 90%: Cities

The exhibition on "Design with the Other 90%" from Oct. 15, 2011 to Jan. 9, 2012 at the National Design Museum in New York is destined to promote design solutions for that 90% of the world population who do not benefit from professional design services. The current theme is "Cities" and will focus primarily on urban growth in the next 20 years primarily in the global South. An online database will enable the joint development of design solutions.
