TED: Technology, Entertainment und Design

Spreading ideas, knowledge and inspiration across the world is the premise behind the NGO "Technology, Entertainment and Design", TED for short, which twice a year brings together an audience from the areas of technology, art, design, science and economics. From the end of February to the beginning of March, Long Beach/Palm Springs and Edinburgh will play host to a series of conferences on the subjects: "Full Spectrum", "Radical Openness" and "The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered". For those unable to attend in person, a selection of the best talks and performances will be available online:

Schirn: George Condo – absurd, humorous, grotesque

Familiar and yet different: George Condo takes the works of great artists from US and European art history, reinterprets them, and quite often takes them to the point of the grotesque. Between February 22 and May 28, Frankfurt's Schirn will be showing an extensive retrospective of the artist's paintings and sculptural works. The exhibition's title "Mental States" references a recurring theme in Condo's works – the states of the human mind.

ETH Zürich: Architecture Photography Positions

Glimmering, bright, chaotic snippets of city life alongside deliberately staged, quiet landscape compositions – as part of the series of exhibitions "Architecture Photography Positions" the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zürich is presenting two distinct perspectives on architecture photography. Works by Martin Stollenwerk and Jürg Zimmermann will be on display there between February 24 and March 22.

Roman Ondák: Closeness and distance, boundaries and possibilities

"People's everyday behavior" and the "objects' hidden qualities" – this is how Slovakian concept artist Roman Ondák describes his field of interest. He specializes in illustrations and spatial interventions that tend to involve the audience in parts. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is now dedicating an exhibition to the artist; "Within Reach of Hand and Eye" will be held in the k21 Ständehaus in Düsseldorf from February 25 to May 28.

Jimenez Lai: Architectural cartoons or comic-like architecture

What do cartoons and architecture have in common? At first glance, not much. Jimenez Lai's works however show us how these distinct disciplines can work to enrich one another. On February 28, the founder and manager of Chicago architecture and design firm Bureau Spectacular and illustrator of numerous comic books will be talking about his multifarious work and the inspiration he finds in theory, history and contemporary trends at New York's School of Visual Arts.

Betahaus: From nail design to universal design

It has now become good industry etiquette for designers to concern themselves with issues surrounding the environment and sustainability, developing solutions to climate change and aging societies, for example. Entitled "Salon#4 Design Kritik", Berlin's Betahaus is opening its doors on March 1 for a forum on topics surrounding a discipline that oscillates between styling and saving the world.
