The human soul is like water
by Nancy Jehmlich | Feb 27, 2009

The average German bathroom measures 7.7 square meters. And the figure is on the up. Such a small space and yet this little room is firmly in the focus of any number of different professions. From March 10 - 14 they will converge at the world's largest trade fair in their industry, the ISH, in Frankfurt. The ISH unites two fairs, namely "The Bathroom Experience" and "Building, Energy, Air-conditioning Technology, Renewable Energies". In terms of area, both sectors are equally represented, however the number of exhibitors in the technical disciplines is double that of the others. One of the prominent themes will be a responsible approach to natural resources. Thanks to innovative sanitary technology, in the last 20 years we have succeeded in lowering water consumption in Germany by 15.6%. Although in this region of the world we actually have no fear of a water shortage, on the contrary, over 80% of available freshwater reserves in Germany remain untapped. However, in global terms inadequate drinking water is number one on the list of environmental problems. A world water meter, which documents on two digital displays the permanent increase in global population and in water consumption, will start counting on the first day of the trade fair and give visual form to the explosive nature of the increase. The world water meter is one of the numerous projects organized by the "Blue Responsibility" initiative. Under this heading, renowned manufacturers of sanitary products have joined forces and will be presenting bathroom products at the ISH which demonstrate sustainable solutions. Their slogan is: Sustainable living without sacrificing comfort. Talking of comfort, we will also be confronted with increasing technologization, which will appeal to bathroom users' playful instinct: the WC with health analysis and online communication with the GP, the flat screen above the bathtub, touch-free electronic fittings and the Asian shower-WC with inbuilt MP3 player.
