SUSTAINABILITY
Build better
The exhibition project thus spans a wide range of topics, from man-made climate change and its impact on construction to numerous approaches and solutions for a conception of architecture that is appropriate for the age of climate change. The connections and dependencies between energy production and demand, the greenhouse effect and climate-damaging emissions are explained, as are the measures needed to mitigate climate change and the impact of emissions caused by buildings. The exhibits allow visitors to explore the potential of architecture to contribute to reducing emissions and energy demand.
When compiled, the focus was on completed projects in Europe. Experts from various fields report on their findings and their understanding of construction in times of climate change in interviews. In addition, the Henning Larsen office in Copenhagen invites visitors to test their knowledge of building materials with ‘Do you speak Carbon’. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is presenting innovative building materials that take a holistic approach to the carbon footprint, resource use and climate impact of building materials, highlighting new potential. Complex components and how they work can also be experienced in large-scale models.
The architecture on display includes the world's first circular kindergarten building, ‘The Swan’ near Copenhagen, which was built by Lendager Arkitekter ApS largely from recycled materials. These were obtained from the existing stock that had previously been stored on the site. The projects on display also include the ‘2226 JED Schlieren’ office and laboratory building by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten, which does not require heating, ventilation or cooling, nor any external energy supply, and offers flexible use.
‘Architecture and Energy. Building in Times of Climate Change’ was curated by Dr Annette Becker in collaboration with architect and civil engineer Werner Sobek. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive programme of events and educational activities, including lectures, panel discussions, excursions, guided tours and activities for children and young people.
