This Spaniard can speak Viennese

For more than two centuries, under the Habsburgs the fate of Austria was closely connected to Spanish fortunes, whereby under the “Reyes Austriacos” Spain rose to the status of world power, no less. Now the Spanish multi-talent Jaime Hayon has placed himself at the service of the “Austriacos” and designed a complete furniture line for Austrian furniture manufacturer Wittmann. And what a perfect fit! The range is called “Vuelta” and features a bulbous outline and graceful, spritely bentwood legs, with the designer, who was never shy of history and opulence, referencing the forms of Viennese Modernism with both great care and great confidence. In short, it fits perfectly into the Wittmann portfolio.

Naturally, the ensemble does not forego that certain Hayon wit that loosens up any historical reminiscence. As such, what we want most from the armchair with its wide backrest that transitions fluidly into the armrests is a cuddle. And the “Leather Side Table” – one of three versions that join “Vuelta” – does indeed call to mind thick elephant feet. This time around too, the ties between Spain and Austria could spawn a success story. (mm)
