Helsinki Design Week

Helsinki is World Design Capital 2012. From September 9-18, 2011 Helsinki Design Week will be offering a taster of what's to come. Spread over the whole city, participants from the fields of design, architecture and fashion will showcase their latest ideas and products. Taking as its motto "To Declare", this year there will be a focus on the messages conveyed by design objects.

Tomás Saraceno: Cloud Cities

Experience weightlessness – that is what is on offer from the "Cloud Cities" exhibition by Argentinean artist Tomás Saraceno from September 15, 2011 to January 15, 2012 in the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin. For the first time, the public will not only be able to contemplate 20 of the artist's balloon modules and hanging villages but also step into the installation itself, which was created as part of the Dornbracht Installation Project, and in doing so allow their own conceptions of location, time and architecture to be turned on their head.

Exhibition on architect Ernst Neufert

As an architect, university lecturer and author, Ernst Neufert not only shaped the teaching profile of Darmstadt's Faculty of Architecture but also had a decisive influence on Darmstadt's cityscape. As part of Architektursommer Rhine-Main 2011, the Darmstadt Technical University is organizing an exhibition on this influential figure: "Ernst Neufert 1900-1986, Leben und Werk des Architekten" (Ernst Neufert 1900-1986, the architect, his life and his work); it will take place in the Ernst Neufert Halle in Darmstadt from September 23 to October 22, 2011.

Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990

"Postmodernism" represents an era that can hardly be described using just one word. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is currently offering the public an insight into this controversial phenomenon, the influence of which first manifested itself in architecture and then in later years in art, film, music, graphic design and fashion, with its comprehensive review "Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990" containing over 250 exhibits. The exhibition will be open from September 24, 2011 to January 15, 2012.

UIA2011 TOKYO: The 24th World Congress of Architecture

Referencing the tragic events in Japan in March of this year, the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) will be holding the 24th World Congress of Architecture in Tokyo from September 26-28, 2011. Entitled "Design 2050 – Architects acting beyond Disasters, through Solidarity, towards Sustainability" this year's congress has been divided into three areas – the environment, culture and living – and will include keynotes by Christo, Tadao Ando, Christoph Ingenhoven, Sanaa as well as David Adjaye and Fumihiko Maki, amongst others. This year the UIA's gold medal – a lifetime achievement award – is to be awarded to Álvaro Siza Vieira from Portugal. On occasion of the congress, the touring exhibition "Post-Oil City- The History of the City's Future" will be on display from September 27 to October 8, 2011 in the Minatomirai subway station in Yokohama.
