Modernism in Miniature

Did the explosion in the mass media also impact on the model-making boom of the 20th century? The exhibition "Modernism in Miniature: Points of view" explores the encounter between photography and model-making between 1920 and 1960. From September 22, 2011 to January 8, 2012, the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal will be hosting a show featuring a wide spectrum of direct reproductions ranging from models for study purposes to hyper-realistic photo montages.

Exhibiting Design

Has design – once an expedient for staging art – now morphed into an exhibit itself? This question is to be addressed at the Vitra Design Museum Symposium in Weil am Rhein. On September 23 and 24, experts from the fields of art history, philosophy, architecture and photography, such as Volker Albus, Mateo Kries, Claudia Marais, Burkhard Meltzer, Tido von Oppeln, Mathias Schwartz-Clauss and Jerszy Seymour, will hold talks under the title "Design ausstellen – Experimentelle Praxis oder Brücke zur Kunst" (Exhibiting Design – Experimental Practice or a Bridge to Art). Places are limited; those wishing to attend the event are therefore required to register before September 19, 2011.

Eames Words

An exhibition on Charles and Ray Eames, to be hosted at the Architecture and Design Museum from October 1, 2011 to January 16, 2012 in Los Angeles, concentrates on the beauty of small things. Both American designers made use of the most advanced technology of their time but sought inspiration in the most simple of objects. Thus "Eames Designs: The Guest Host Relationship" exhibits an informal collection with objects and materials from the past and present and relates to the lesser-know aspects of the designer couple's life together.
