Summer academy: When life is least of all art

For the 17th time, Hochschule Wismar is inviting students, young professionals, pupils and trainees from all over the world to the Baltic coast. This year, the design program follows the maxim "When life is least of all art", and will be led by Finnish artist trio FinnFemFel. Courses from modeling through photography leave participants much scope to develop their own creative ideas. Of course, the varied accompanying program also prioritizes having fun together. Deadline for registration is May 15, 2012.

Munich: Women in art

An exhibition in Munich's Pinakothek der Moderne opening on March 30 is devoted to the fairer sex as an art object. In the form of Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann and Willem de Kooning the artistic positions of three outstanding artists of the 20th century are compared. Some 92 exhibits offer a whole host of perspectives on femininity. Here, women are not just clichéd objects of desire, but emerge as a "sensitive mirror of social and political problems and upheaval".

K20: Fresh Widow or plain window images

It defines the threshold between inside and outside and offers a part view of the big picture. Owing to its symbolic importance, the window has always served as a popular subject in art. The window's historical lineage and the many ways it can be represented have therefore been taken as a central theme for a show at K20. As of March 31, over 100 interpretations on the theme by countless different artists will be displayed, from Henri Matisse through Robert Delaunay. A depiction of a window by Marcel Duchamps provided the title for the exhibition: "Fresh Widow", a playful French variation on the idea of a "French Window".

Freitag: A bag writes history

The Freitag brothers' success story began in 1993 with a self-sewn bag made of used truck tarps. The recycling item swiftly became a bestseller and is now a fashion accessory that is omnipresent on the streets of this world. By means of prototypes, interviews, films and other finds in the company archive, as of April 4 Zurich's Museum für Gestaltung will be exploring the historical development of this extraordinary Swiss corporation.
