El Greco: Father figure of Modernism

For many years El Greco's works were forgotten. In the early 20th century, interest was rekindled and artists such as Max Oppenheimer or Franz Marc were truly sized by an "El Greco fever". The exhibition "El Greco and Modernism" in Düsseldorf's Museum Kunstpalast which runs thru August 12, is devoted to El Greco's oeuvre almost 400 years after his death. Religious themes are the main red thread running through the just under 40 works on show, but also the strangely over-tall figures and dreamlike landscapes in pale gray hues so typical of El Greco. They are juxtaposed to works by selected artists who actively engaged with themes from El Greco's work, such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Robert Delaunay.

Museum Folkwang: the art of the Twenties

From the artistic point of view, the Twenties were especially productive; one need to think only of New Objectivity, Expressionism or Constructivism. Taking as its title "Our Age has a new sense of Form", the Photography and Prints Collection at Museum Folkwang has joined forces with Deutsches Plakatmuseum to launch a three-part exhibition on this subject. Thru August 5, countless pictures and journals, prints, photographs and posters will be on show.

Christian Louboutin: an homage to the red sole

At the tender age of 12 Christian Louboutin was already lending expression to his fascination with shoes in the form of highly imaginative shoe designs, which he painted himself and used to try and impress show girls. Today, the icon among the shoe designers of this world can look back on a 20-year career during which his creations have emerged as the epitome of style and elegance, not least owing to their unmistakable hallmark, the bright red soles. A major retrospective at London's Design Museum presents many of his designs and explores the phases in his creative work – from the first design and prototypes through the manufacturing process to the finished product of (female) desire.
