Jaime Hayon is one of those rare designers who surprise you. Quite irrespective of what they put their minds to and whether you like the one or other style: It’s always well thought through and very well made. And now the polymath has created a series of luminaires for the new Catalan label Parachilna that combine any number of excellent properties. Be it as pendant luminaires or as a desk lamp, Jaime’s “Aballs” are a formally perfect combination of illuminated sphere and rounded cylinder, the surface finish shimmering seductively. Indeed, all aspects of the luminaire seem sumptuous. And all Hayon needs are ceramics, hand-blown glass, and a ring of polished brass to entrance us. “Aballs” comes as a candelabra, pendant luminaires of different sizes, and two table-top versions; the ceramic base is available in white, black and gold.
