Biography
Born in Sabadell (Barcelona) in 1947.
From his father, a salesman of high quality fabrics, he inherited his taste for clothes and his knowledge of high class tailoring. But it was not fashion design which really attracted his attention; it was music:
he tried to earn a living playing the guitar in various groups, a task which proved so difficult that he finally had to accede to the wishes of his father and started work in a textile factory, where he learned to observe the differences between fabrics and appreciate their qualities.
At the age of 19, together with his brother Esteban, he opened a clothes shop in the ‘in’ place of the
60s in Spain: Platja d’Aro, on the Costa Brava (Wild Coast). In the shop, called GROC (Yellow in Catalan), the brothers put on show the latest fashions, occasionally together with items designed by them. During the two years it was open, Groc became the calling place for the whole of Europe: they sold coloured trousers and T-shirts, bathing costumes
and floral shirts for men in a space created with minimal resources and a great deal of imagination. Later on, Antonio and Esteban Miró were able to open another shop in Barcelona, which slowly established itself among the high society in the city.
In 1977, our designer registered the ‘Antonio Miró’ brand for men and women, a fact which allowed him to begin exporting and to take part in the most prestigious international fashion shows. In 1987 he received the Cristóbal Balenciaga Award as the best Spanish designer. Five years later, he was responsible for the creation of the wardrobe for the Barcelona Olympic Games; another highlight of his CV is the design of the curtain for the recently reconstructed Gran Teatre del Liceu (Opera House) in Barcelona.
