On magic caps and slit pants

The Shanghai Collection was exclusively designed by INCHfurniture, for the furnishing of the Swiss pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
INCHfurniture combines superior design with sustainable timber management. The makers of the Swiss pavilion have commi
ssioned INCHfurniture to realise the pavilion's concept creatively and contentwise in its furnishing. Inspired by the architectural vision of the pavilion, INCHfurniture conceived the Shanghai Collection for the furnishing of the restaurant and the VIP-lo
unge, in collaboration with the architects Buchner Bründler. The restaurant is appointed with round tables in different sizes. The black lacquered polygon inserted into the table leaf carries the formal setting of the architecture. The round shape corresp
onds to the Chinese tradition of the big round table where the family or a community comes together for a shared meal. Alongside this table, the angular Shanghai Chair was developed. This robust chair made from solid teak ought to withstand the visitor cr
owds, and nevertheless convey a sense of the supple lightness which is INCHfurniture’s trademark style. In the pavilion’s VIP-lounge, there are combinations of the Shanghai Lounge Chair in groups of three, together with a side table. The ensemble, made fr
om teak and leather, stands out from the darkness of the smoothened concrete floor in rich contrast and creates a sophisticated and classy ambience.
