Jan Kath: GOL NURA by Jan Kath
The beauty of resilient plants in knotting and flat weaving techniques
A rare moment after a sudden rainfall brings new life to the otherwise barren desert landscape. Colors emerge from the dusty soil, delicate flowers unfold—present and vibrant, without being intrusive. This natural spectacle is the source of inspiration for GOL NURA by Jan Kath.
The collection translates the aesthetics of plants that thrive in extreme conditions into carpet designs. Calm, earthy base tones form the background, while floral elements subtly stand out. Technically, Jan Kath relies on a combination of two knotting methods: the classic Tibetan knot, known for its open, airy structure, and the flat weaving technique Sumak.
The interplay of both techniques creates a striking high-low effect that sculpts the floral motifs. This gives the surface additional depth and a tactile quality that consistently reflects the theme of resilient desert flora.
