RCR Italia: Twist by Paolo Santandrea
Sculpture Meets Function: An innovative vanity unit with dynamic geometry and precise rotational mechanics.
With “Twist,” RCR Italia, in collaboration with architect Paolo Santandrea, has developed a vanity unit that combines structural design with sculptural form. The curved geometry follows a continuous line of motion, transforming the object into an architectural element in its own right.
The concept includes a vanity, three rotating drawers, and a fixed storage unit. At its heart is a specially developed rotation mechanism that efficiently utilizes the space beneath the basin and reduces the need for plumbing and hardware space. The drawers can be opened in both directions; the position of the support bracket defines their respective range of motion.
Thanks to its striking form, Twist is not limited to the bathroom. The piece of furniture can structure various spatial configurations and, as a functional object, also serves as a design accent.
A key feature of the design is the versatility of its color scheme. In addition to monochromatic and two-tone versions, the five structural bands can be customized individually, giving the piece a variety of appearances.
The vanity is made of Technokarm, a non-porous composite material consisting of aluminum hydroxide and acrylic, which is characterized by dimensional stability and durability. Expanded polyurethane is used for the rotating elements, combining low porosity with high load-bearing capacity.
