End of an era
It should have taken place this November - now Designers' Saturday in Langenthal, an important platform not only for the Swiss architecture and design scene, has been cancelled in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic. The losses associated with this step have robbed the event of the financial basis it needs to continue. The Board of Directors of D'S Design Center AG, which is responsible for Designers' Saturday, had to announce the cancellation of the format yesterday evening with a heavy heart.
An era is thus coming to an end: first organised in 1987, the event, which has been held for over 30 years, provided a unique opportunity for many companies and designers from Switzerland and abroad to exchange ideas with architects and planners in a relaxed atmosphere and to present their products and projects in the authentic ambience of the local production facilities. At the five locations Création Baumann, Girsberger, Glas Trösch, Hector Egger Holzbau and Ruckstuhl, visitors were able to get to know the work of more than 50 companies, numerous universities and up-and-coming young designers. For the exciting insights into the production processes of the hosts, they kept parts of the production in operation throughout the weekend especially for the event. In addition, a bus shuttle was organised each time to transport the visitors comfortably from location to location. The small Swiss town of Langenthal has become a central pilgrimage destination for guests from the national and international design scene on this "Saturday", which over the years has expanded into a three-day programme. The unique and unconventional installations, which were designed especially for the event, delighted a good 15,000 visitors each time.
The fascinating and inspiring presentations, exciting projects and interactions as well as the familiar and hospitable atmosphere of this unique event will always be remembered by its guests. We will surely miss Designers's Saturday.
