Alcova

The seventh edition of the contemporary design platform Alcova will be open to the public in the unique setting of two iconic villas in the Milan area, Villa Bagatti Valsecchi and Villa Borsani. Admission is free and advance booking is not required. The central theme of the exhibitions is "Living". The spectrum of the 70 or so exhibitors ranges from well-known designers and collaborations with major brands to up-and-coming companies and young talents from international schools.

Dropcity

This year, the urban centre and research cluster Dropcity will create a space within a space under the title "Dropcity in-progress" using 3D printing and construction partnerships such as Kiel University, WASP and the SOCII construction collective from Tbilisi: Visitors will be able to follow the construction progress live during Milan Design Week. The installation, conceived by architect Andrea Caputo, is intended as a cultural apparatus and should serve as a tool for architects and designers to engage in a dialogue about imagining and creating a better world. The supporting programme offers exhibitions, lectures, experiments, DJ sets and sound explorations as well as live interventions in architecture and design.

Verbally scribbled

Alfredo Häberli is publishing two volumes this year with "Verbal gekritzelt. 30 years, questions, answers" in co-operation with Scheidegger & Spiess: In the first volume, the designer looks back at the people, places and objects that have shaped him and formed his ideas of creative processes. For the second volume, Häberli asked 30 personalities from his environment to ask him one question each, which he now answers in an entertaining and honest way. The questioners include designers, design critics, architects, journalists and creative directors. In a dialogue with design expert Dr Meret Ernst from the FHNW in Basel, he delves into the depths of the book and then signs it for the guests.

Formafantasma

The exhibition "La Casa Dentro", curated by Alberto Salvadori, will be on show at the Fondazione ICA Milan. The works developed by Formafantasma especially for the show include furniture and light objects, for which the duo have explored themes such as personal identity and collective memory. They emphasise its gender-specific character and its roots in a conservative understanding of masculinity.

Zona Sarpi

Zona Sarpi, a platform that promotes the network of design-related cultural projects and events, will be presented for the first time at Milan Design Week. The artistic direction is in the hands of Michele Brunello, founding architect of the architectural firm Dontstop, which specialises in urban projects with a social impact, and creative consultant Luca Fois. The project will be developed in collaboration with the neighbourhood community and will offer services from creatives, companies and institutions.

Trienniale

"What?" is an installation by Philippe Starck and the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain at the Impluvium of the Milan Triennale, which pays homage to the architect, designer, artist and theorist Alessandro Mendini. Inspired by the experiences that Philippe Starck shared with Alessandro Mendini, the exhibition takes the viewer into his creative universe through Starck's perspective. The installation, which is intended to reflect Mendini's brain, consists of sounds and images that are constantly changing. For this experience, Starck has engaged the Soundwalk Collective, an internationally renowned collective of artists and musicians founded by Stephan Crasneanscki.

Hydro


At Milan Design Week 2024, the Norwegian aluminium and renewable energy company Hydro will present the exhibition "100R", curated by Art Director Lars Beller Fjetland and engineer Anders Helander. It will showcase products made from "Hydro CIRCAL 100R", the first industrial-scale aluminium product made entirely from post-consumer scrap. The exhibits are by Inga Sempé, Max Lamb, Andreas Engesvik, Shane Schneck, Rachel Griffin, John Tree and Philippe Malouin.

 The exhibition is part of the Capsule Plaza format, which, in addition to the presentation at Spazio Maiocchi, also offers further exhibitions and an extensive supporting programme at 10 Corso Como.

AMDL Circle

On the occasion of Milano Design Week 2024, AMDL CIRCLE presents Leaveitbe, an interactive research project that reflects on the idea of free space, with installations by Michele De Lucchi and Sou Fujimoto, realised by Produzione Privata and CondeHouse.

ECAL

As part of Milano Design Week 2024, ECAL presents UPS – Under Pressure Solutions, an experimental research project that aims to reduce the environmental impact of the furniture industry through the use of materials with shape memory.

 The exhibition showcases the process and results of this research led by five industrial designers teaching at ECAL, as well as objects designed by Master Product Design students that reveal the innovative and creative potential of cellulose sponge.

Colab

Colab is the first dedicated materials library in the UAE. It is a social enterprise based in DubaiDesign District (D3) that primarily functions as a materials library, inspiration and learning center. It aims to enhance design in the region by providing a platform to showcase the latest materials and design trends. As part of the Isola Design Festival, Colab will present the pop-up show "Rethink" and showcase a selection of ten sustainable materials from different designers, such as AeroGraph™, a patented, self-assembling graphene nanocomposite or Datecrete, the world's first cementitious material based on date seeds.

Acapulco Design & A Manual

The chrome-clad kiosk "24CR Chiosco Cromato" will offer a small oasis in Milan's Brera design district: In addition to cold drinks, Benjamin Caja and Emanuel Sirch will also be serving a limited version of the Acapulco Chair in chrome. The 24 CR Amici Chair collection is made of stainless steel and covered with chrome-coloured PVC. Four different versions of the chair and two side tables are part of the new colour series.

Terraformæ

Terraformæ is an experimental design and research hub focused on terracotta. Born as an extension of the historic brick manufactoring company Fornace Sant’Anselmo, Terraformæ aims to explore the potentials of clay and push the boundaries of a fundamental material that has made the history of our structures. Driven by a deep passion for terracotta, it seeks to rethink its role from a modern perspective, elevating it from being a pure structural or decorative element to a real gamechanger. Thanks to a process of mutual influence with young designers, architects and researchers, Terraformæ aspires to be a reference point and an incubator for new products, experiments, research, opportunities, and methods.

Baranzante Ateliers

During Milan Design Week, the collective founded by Belgian designer and architect Lionel Jadot will be showing collectible design as well as artworks and performances by Belgium is Design, Atelier Ecru Gallery from Ghent and Thema from Paris, among others. The exhibition venue is a 7,300 square metre industrial building from the 1950s.

Google

Google is presenting the light and sound installation "Making Sense of Colour" at this year's Fuorisalone. The show explores the sensory qualities of colour and was developed by Google's Vice President of Hardware Design, Ivy Ross, and her design team in collaboration with the Chromasonic art and research laboratory. Fabric panels form a total of 21 rooms, each dedicated to one colour. The light and sound sources are influenced by the movements of the visitors. The show is a reference to the technology company's new hardware design.

Nieuwe Instituut

In cooperation with Temporiuso and New Order of Fashion, the Nieuwe Instituut is presenting the experimental New Store during Milan Design Week: the pop-up shop showcases alternative forms of sustainable design, such as the processing of human hair into yarn and textiles. After the first presentation at the Dutch Design Week 2023, the show in Milan is the second step in a multi-year project with the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) and the research consultancy The Seeking State, the aim of which is a permanent New Store with regenerative products in the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.

Materially NOW

Materially NOW is a multifaceted format that focuses both spatially and symbolically on the study of materials and the work of companies that are bringing about a small but significant revolution through research, investment and production: they are changing the present to shape the future of design. The Superdesign Show is an exhibition, a forum, an active workshop and also a networking hub. The space is enlivened by a calendar of workshops and presentations and references the materials presented. The exhibition design is conceived in such a way that every element can be reused in the spirit of a fully circular economy. In addition Materially will present a selection of bio-based materials from the MCX materials library at the Design Tech Co-factory in the Certosa district and moderate a panel dedicated to sustainable materials.

Interiors by David Lynch. A Thinking Room


Anyone familiar with the US television series "Twin Peaks", which was developed by David Lynch and Mark Frost in the early 1990s, will be familiar with the Red Room, the "Waiting Room", which is hung with red curtains. A supernatural space between worlds that can both clear and confuse the mind with a multitude of illusions and strange encounters. With "A Thinking Room", curator Antonio Monda is creating an adaptation of this room at the Salone del Mobile. In collaboration with David Lynch and Lombardini22, the extraordinary installation will provide a surreal backdrop in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the trade fair.

Design Kiosk

The Design Kiosk was created by DWA-Design Studio and strengthens the link between the Salone del Mobile and the city of Milan: the programme includes dialogues with creative people such as Stefano Boeri, Luca Nichetto, Piero Lissoni, Cino Zucchi and Matylda Krzykowski and will also offer a meeting place in Piazza della Scala for the duration of the trade fair.

Universo Satellite – 25 years of SaloneSatellite

The SaloneSatellite, conceived as a "planet" orbiting around the Salone del Mobile di Milano, has long since developed into a real "universe" and the Universo Satellite exhibition is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Founded in 1998 by Marva Griffin, over 14,000 up-and-coming talents have exhibited at the SaloneSatellite to date and, thanks to the internationally significant platform and Marva Griffin's great commitment to young designers, have been able to establish groundbreaking contacts with companies, journalists and other creative professionals.
