FEATURED STORY
Creative Interplay

Lodes has developed the "Cono di Luce" luminaire in collaboration with artist and designer Ron Arad. It provides not only great ambient light but also inspiration on the creative use of Printed Circuit Boards.

“Sometimes you start with an idea and in the process, you lose something. In this case, I don’t think we lost anything. If anything, we gained,” says Ron Arad. This is the first collaboration between the renowned artist-cum-designer and Lodes, the highly traditional Italian manufacturer of luminaires. The objective was to come up with a unique pendant luminaire. The outcome is a functional art object comprising a flexible, translucent circuit board held in place by a rigid version that acts as a stabilizing frame, and is available in red, gray, and gold. The boards are encased in a transparent cone made of heat-resistant Pyrex glass. It takes 33 steps to carefully attach the copper conductors, electric circuits, and fit over 200 LED chips to the fiberglass panel. Arad relies on the aesthetics of both the technical components as well as the superimposition of regular grids and bases the highly graphic design on the alternation of light and shadow. As such, technical elements are not only extracted from their usual typology and use – they are shown in a new light. Moreover, the high light output of the luminaire can be switch-dimmed as required.

It’s possible to personalize the character of “Cono di Luce” thanks to a creative selection of PCB light sheets designed by Ron Arad: While the version with a red frame draws attention to the iconic colour, the gray version boasts a continuous surface with Ron Arad’s signature. Although the design appears subtle when the luminaire is switched off, once it is turned on the impressive depth of the moiré effect becomes apparent. Two sizes were selected for the pendant luminaire: 45 and 60 centimeters. For the sales launch in January 2024 Lodes will also be proudly presenting a new table version of the Cono di Luce measuring 50 centimeters.

Both models can be experienced in the Design Post during the imm cologne international furniture and interior design trade fair from January 14 to January 18, 2024.
