SUSTAINABILITY
A new type

A modular, repairable mattress made of sustainable materials – how does that work? The interdisciplinary design studio Layer, led by Benjamin Hubert, realised this idea for the brand Mazzu.

"Mazzu" comes without foam – instead, the open structure of the mattress by the eponymous brand features modular steel pocket springs, each consisting of an hourglass spring. They are encased in a 3D-knitted textile, combined with a recyclable system. For the level of firmness, the classic firm, medium and soft grades of tension can be selected, not only for the entire surface of the mattress but also for individual sections. The configuration of the mattress support and the size of the base can be customised by freely expanding or reducing the components and even changed at a later date. An upholstered cover is placed on top, the model of which is also variable. Nothing is glued or bonded; instead of PU foam, the materials used include organic wool, recycled polyester and recycled polymers such as natural latex. According to Layer, the comfort of "Mazzu" is equivalent to that of a classic spring mattress.

New modules can be added and removed from the flexible structure as required, meaning that each level of the mattress can be customised. The concept also allows easy maintenance and cleaning. Layer has included a thoughtful packaging system: for space-saving logistics, "Mazzu" can be completely dismantled, with the spring modules being temporarily compressed from a height of 250 millimetres to 50 millimetres. The compact cardboard packaging can also be reused for transport and storage. "We’ve been working with Mazzu for the last three years, and have been so impressed with their commitment to driving a groundbreaking, sustainable system for sleep. The bedding industry needs step changes in the way it thinks about delivering high-performance products whilst being mindful of the planet and Mazzu are leading the way in contributing to that dialogue," said Benjamin Hubert. Mazzu Furniture (Xiamen) Co. Ltd. is a 100 percent subsidiary of the Chinese company New-Tec Integration Xiamen Co, Ltd. – the concept was presented at the imm Cologne furniture trade fair, which took place from 14 to 18 January 2024.
