VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2022 – PREVIEW
Design for life

Autumn is on its way and with it Austria's largest curated design festival. From 16 to 25 September 2022, Vienna Design Week offers numerous programme highlights that are worth discovering – such as the "Urban Food & Design" format.

The extensive programme of the Vienna Design Week has a special strength: the great importance of design for society and the community is presented in a true-to-life way based on interdisciplinary research. At the internationally oriented event, it is possible to explore in a relaxed atmosphere the great influence that the design of products and processes has on our everyday lives. It also provides low-threshold access to the work of designers beyond the mere presentation of products. This year, the Vienna Design Week is setting up its tents in Mariahilf, Vienna's sixth district, with three festival headquarters.

Project "Whats cooking" by Rohkonzept und Herd - Open Kitchen

One of the thematic lighthouses will be the format "Urban Food & Design". In cooperation with companies from the food industry, the participating designers will develop actual approaches for an optimal urban food supply and test circular economy solutions. This includes the question of sustainable and ecological production of product and packaging. Our habits for transporting and storing food are also analysed and provided with counter-proposals for optimisation. Part of this year's programme are four exciting teams that stand for a holistic approach to the topic, supported by the Vienna Business Agency. Together with Lorenz Snackworld, EOOS Next will explore the tension between morality and pleasure in a dystopian production: An audiovisual installation will make global chains and connections as well as their effects visible. Studio Jutta Goessl shows in parallel with Austria's first digital online farmers' market markta the design for a high-quality transport and storage system that is to be transformed into a collection. With the recyclable concept for premium packaging, a new behaviour pattern could be established in society that would reduce the environmental impact of disposable packaging.

Designers and nutrition experts from überkochen & Gourmet Kids

The crux of creative approaches always lies in communication - the team of designers and nutrition experts from überkochen are well aware of this. Together with Gourmet Kids, they will enter into a dialogue about good food with parents and children at the Vienna Design Week. A mobile learning station and cooking workshop will help them deal with the topic intuitively. Meanwhile, the project "Whats cooking" by Rohkonzept und Herd – Open Kitchen offers its own methods for cooperative kitchen design. Within the framework of this project, a design workshop is offered that shows how processes in the preparation of dishes can function better if the users are in the foreground when planning the kitchen equipment.

Sustainable consumption and rethinking familiar processes for a common change of the current system – the Vienna Design Week will offer a variety of valuable suggestions by means of forward-looking research in the field of food & design, which can be taken up by the economy. (am)
