For us, light is not only essential to life, but depending on its intensity and color has various effects on the human body and our sense of wellbeing. As such, a lack of natural light can impact negatively on the health and mental wellbeing of people who have to spend much of their day indoors. Just how important the right illumination is can be seen from the lighting concepts conceived by luminaire manufacturer Waldmann for two care and treatment centers run by pro-persona.care GmbH in Altentreptow and Neubrandenburg. Here, biodynamic illumination simulates daylight-like situations and atmospheres in the rooms. Used as a non-medicinal form of treatment, it is intended to help patients with dementia and other neurodegenerative illnesses be more active in everyday life at the centers and to perceive their environment as pleasant. The strength of the lighting is based on the course taken by the sun – bright in the morning with a high proportion of cold light, softer in the evening with predominantly warm light. This lighting scenario supports the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.

Depending on the use of the rooms, luminaires were selected for each section that create optimal conditions. In the main area the suspended luminaire “Vivaa,” with its high proportion of indirect light (65%), emits a pleasant and even light, which changes over the course of the day by means of predefined settings. The ceiling luminaire “Oblo” was installed to provide ideal lighting in the corridors. In the evening and at night the small wall luminaire “Cube” enables swift orientation and makes for a cozy atmosphere. The luminaire “Amadea Bed,” which residents can easily reach from their bed, offers four different light intensity settings in the individual rooms. In the bathrooms “Vanera” provides glare-free, even illumination and moreover is naturally splash-proof. Waldmann’s biodynamic lighting concept is also to the benefit of staff at the care centers, who say that thanks to the intelligent illumination they feel more balanced overall and sleep better at night.
