Pioneering work while seated
Wilkhahn is currently demonstrating how the archetype of the swivel chair can be reimagined for the present day, as the design of the ‘WiChair’ has been reduced to the essentials: a frame made of recyclable steel, a base made of recycled aluminium, and seat and back shells of FSC-certified moulded wood. With a maximum of eleven screws, each individual part can be replaced if necessary, and the armrests are optional. Since its foundation in 1907, Wilkhahn has seen itself as a counter-model to the throwaway society and has consistently focused on the durability and reparability of its office furniture. The new development is thus part of a long line of sustainable ideas that have contributed to the Lower Saxony-based company's international reputation today.
‘It is in keeping with our philosophy that, when in doubt, we place greater value on the ecological aspect of our actions than on quick profits,’ reads the mission statement of Wilkhahn's board of directors from 1989. The ‘WiChair’ is also a reference to industrial quality that has proven itself over decades, including a modern twist for 3D mobility: A specially developed spring element is attached under the seat. This allows the comfortable dynamics to be adjusted to the weight of the person sitting down. The design is operated very simply with a rotary handle. The swivel chair, which keeps the body moving even when sitting, has a refreshingly minimalist look and is free of any burden.
Thanks to the numerous material and colour options, the ‘WiChair’ can be flexibly adapted to both formal and informal working environments. In addition to the classic raw steel version, the frame is also available in textured matt black, light grey, blush pink, soft lemon or mint green. The chair can also be fitted with removable fabric covers or full upholstery. At the same time, the swivel chair sets a new benchmark in its category with a product carbon footprint of 31 kilograms of CO2e. Wilkhahn is committed to the goals of sustainable development in all its business activities and is certified according to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001, which specifies globally recognised requirements for environmental management systems. These are ideal conditions for Wilkhahn's ‘WiChair’ to become a valued classic in every respect. (am)
