Chris Slutter has been fascinated with early machinery ever since he can remember. "And not just the materials and forms," he adds. "I am also intrigued by the process...how the thing was made and how it works." In his design practice, he often returns to these earlier techniques, "creating something new out of old practices."
Because of his interest in systems and functionality, Slutter considered becoming an electrician or carpenter before enrolling at the AKI Academy for Visual Arts and Design in Enschede. He graduated in 1997. That same year he won a Dutch Furniture Award for a "Lazy," a lamp that can be posed in different leaning poses.
