Philosophy
Porcelain is also known as white gold. For centuries, it was valued like gold because its production was a long-kept secret and is still a great artisanal skill to this day. FÜRSTENBERG’s history began in 1747, when Duke Carl I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel founded a porcelain manufactory at the Fürstenberg hunting lodge. FÜRSTENBERG has been manufacturing at the same site since its foundation. The castle itself was used as the factory until 1974, when it became a porcelain museum. Today, some 80 employees work in modern production premises in the castle grounds. These people, with their passion and their skilled craftsmanship, are constantly redefining the limits of what is possible. After all, porcelain calls for a great deal of experience, steady hands and a little perseverance to keep trying new things. This is how Fürstenberg creates porcelain that touches all the senses and gives long-lasting pleasure.
Alongside its deep roots in European porcelain art and craftsmanship, it is the creative collaboration with artists and designers that characterises the quality of FÜRSTENBERG. Time and again, international design experts – ranging from porcelain painter Pascha Weitsch in the 18th century or the Bauhaus pioneer Wilhelm Wagenfeld in the early 20th century, to modern-day collaborations with Studio Besau-Marguerre or Alfredo Häberli – have developed innovative creations for FÜRSTENBERG The FÜRSTENBERG team is always keen to think ahead in terms of table culture and at the same time produce authentic and functional porcelain – as in its current collaboration with Foster + Partners Industrial Design. The result is a forward-looking, modular tableware series: DATUM combines a clear design language with exceptional functionality and contemporary flexibility. DATUM received the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2023 for its high design quality.
As well as modern collections like DATUM, the TOUCHÉ cups range or the PLISAGO porcelain side tables, FÜRSTENBERG also offers classic tableware series in various designs, allowing for limitless options when it comes to individual dining culture. They include the CARLO series by the Italian designer, Carlo Dal Bianco. The handcrafted handles on cups, bowls and pots lend the service a special charm and elegance, which is accentuated by the particularly thin body. Designs like ESTE or ORO, featuring shiny gold, create elegant highlights on the table setting.
Regardless of whether a design is created in collaboration with internationally renowned designers or in the company’s own studio, FÜRSTENBERG follows the vision that genuine craftsmanship, a passion for sustainable design and pleasure in beautiful things are values for all time. In a world that’s moving ever faster, the desire for things that are made with great dedication and particular care is stronger than ever before. Things that are made in a genuine manufactory where the people are doing what they love and love what they’re doing.
