A new balance

With ‘Axia’, Lodes presents a suspension luminaire that offers a radically contemporary interpretation of the archetypal chandelier. Designed by Vittorio Venezia and Carolina Martinelli, it is based on a construction feature that characterises the entire object: the absence of visible cables.

‘Axia’ refers to the ancient Greek word for axis and value – a nod to the conceptual centre of the luminaire. A central, tapered axis guides the positive and negative poles, keeping the composition in balance and forming the starting point for delicate arms that carry the light softly and diffusely into the room. The technology becomes invisible, the function transforms into a decorative stylistic element and an integral part of the form. "When light is no longer conducted through a cable but through the structure itself, the nature of the luminaire changes. The result is an electrifying and flexible system in which energy circulates through the luminaire body like an invisible lymph flow," say Vittorio Venezia and Carolina Martinelli, who are architects as well as designers. The lighting is deliberately minimalist, yet still intense: it surrounds rooms with a diffuse effect rather than actively illuminating them, while providing more than 3500 lumens. With this gentle strength, ‘Axia’ by Lodes optimally highlights the centre of the room, such as in living areas, foyers and lounge areas.

"Axia" is available in shiny bronze or black chrome. Both versions are manufactured using PVD coating, which not only changes the surface of the stainless steel but also enables the transfer of electrical polarities. The material therefore does not appear to be coated, but rather coloured from within, giving it a subtle depth. The design of the luminaire follows a clear logic in terms of constructaion: it can be packed compactly and only unfolds its final shape with a diameter of around 80 centimetres when assembled – a moment that involves the user in its creation and makes the luminaire appear approachable despite its technical precision.

For Lodes, the creation of “Axia” represents in addition a further development of its own understanding of design: ‘“Axia” is an important step for us in our ongoing search for a balance between aesthetics, technology and light quality. It is a project that clearly expresses the direction in which we are moving: to create objects that convey a contemporary and distinctive message,’ says Managing Director Massimiliano Tosetto. Carolina Martinelli and Vittorio Venezia have therefore combined conceptual clarity, technical reduction and atmospheric lighting for Lodes to create a luminaire that enriches spacious rooms as a stylish eye-catcher without dominating them.
