SUSTAINABILITY
On the future of construction
The exhibition on the future of construction invites visitors to engage in a lively debate focusing on fundamental design principles for a climate-friendly renewal of our building culture. This includes, in particular, topics such as climate resilience, biodiversity, sufficiency, revitalisation, cycle management, experimentation and taking action.
Around 80 projects from across Europe that address the challenges of climate change will be on display. For example, the Glasner House in the Ahr Valley is designed to protect against future flooding, and the Rambla Climate House in Spain is designed to protect against drought. The use of natural materials such as rammed earth by Anna Heringer and wood by Hermann Kaufmann raises questions about what is essential. The renovation of an old barn by Studio Bua in Iceland and the conversion of the former World Trade Centre in Brussels by 51N4E reduce resource consumption, CO2 emissions and construction waste. Innovative research projects such as NEST UMAR by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Hybrid Flax Pavilion by the University of Stuttgart explore new possibilities for dealing with circular material cycles and computer-based construction methods.
The highlight will be presented on the museum square: ‘Vert’ – a green wooden beam construction by AHEC, Diez Office and OMC°C that helps cool public spaces and promote biodiversity in urban environments. Meanwhile, the foyer of the Bundeskunsthalle will feature Tree.ONE by EcoLogicStudio (Claudia Pasquero/Marco Poletto), a ceiling-high installation consisting of a synthetic tree grown from microalgae that absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and converts it into biomaterial. For the exhibition design, the architecture firm MVRDV Rotterdam has used almost exclusively materials already available in the Bundeskunsthalle. WEtransFORM is an initiative of the Bundeskunsthalle in partnership with the New European Bauhaus and transform.NRW.
