Nordhavn sends a textile message

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec not only dream up textile designs for Kvadrat. They have also for the second time designed the label’s Copenhagen flagship showroom.
Coda 2 is a colour update of Coda, a tactile upholstery textile, which has a distinctive three-dimensional expression. The fabric combines a graphic, textured surface and sophisticated colours to very lively effect: from a distance it appears monochrome, but when seen from closer up it reveals a second colour.
Coda’s designers crafted the textile, as they put it, to be ‘the skin of a three-dimensional object’, as opposed to a ‘flat’ textile. Reflecting this, its texture interacts with furniture, which causes the look of the fabric to keep changing as it turns, bends and folds. Made from wool, Coda is woven in two layers, with each in a different colour: it is the hue of the base layer that is surprisingly revealed as the viewer approaches the textile. This distinctive construction also serves to accentuate the three-dimensional character of the fabric and the rhythmic pattern of its bold texture.
