The historic building in Duisburg-Hochfeld, once used as the headquarters of Deutsche Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft Demag, is one of the most striking locations in North Rhine-Westphalia's industrial history. Today, it serves as the location for Siemens Energy – a global leader in energy technology and a licensed brand of Siemens AG. Customised turbo compressors are developed, manufactured and extensively tested on the approximately 250,000 square metre site. These are used in a wide variety of industrial applications, from the energy sector and the process industry to modern technologies such as the use of alternative energy sources.

Even from the outside, the lighting clearly highlights the connection between the industrial past and contemporary design. The wide cantilevered canopy features two continuous lines of light over its entire length of more than 25 metres, complemented by a line flush with the floor that marks the entrance and provides safe guidance in the dark. The 54 metres of LED light line 40.30 in the canopy and the 5.5 metres of light line 12.30 in the floor are opaquely cast, dustproof and waterproof. The perfectly adjusted luminosity intuitively guides visitors into the building and at the same time sets a clear accent. The lobby now serves as a central space: as part of the comprehensive modernisation, the spacious area with high ceilings, wide window fronts and multi-storey staircases has been transformed into a contemporary reception centre – supported by the lighting concept from DNI Light GmbH and the individually coordinated luminaires from ADO Lights.

Inside, a carefully coordinated interplay of architecture, materials and lighting is on display: in the foyer and reception hall, custom-made LED Linargo pendant lights, round special constructions with diameters of 1800 and 2400 millimetres, appear like floating light objects. Their calm appearance emphasises the representative function of the rooms. The gold-coloured powder coating in accordance with RAL 1036 ties in with the colour scheme of the railings and creates a harmonious connection between light and architecture. With a light colour of 4000 K, excellent colour rendering and separately dimmable direct and indirect components via DALI, the result is a lighting design that is both impressive and pleasantly understated. The stairwell cores feature the most impressive lighting installation of the project: multi-level LED Linargo ring lights with diameters ranging from 1000 to 2400 millimetres form vertical structures that emphasise the height of the circular stairwells and give them a clear design identity. The combination of direct and indirect light, high-quality powder coating and individually replaceable LEDs highlights the technical and craftsmanship precision of the project. A total of 15 pendant luminaires and 21 surface-mounted luminaires were installed in this area, lending the stairwells an elegant ambience.

The use of ADO Lights luminaires plays a key role in conveying the important role of the Duisburg location within the global energy company in spatial terms. Pathways are clearly defined, rooms are functionally illuminated and, at the same time, an atmosphere is created that conveys professionalism and openness. The new lighting concept thus combines historical substance with contemporary design and a forward-looking orientation.n Accent.
