Design in stone

The collectible design brand Matera Collective, founded by Manuela Rotta and Stefan Scholten, brings together international perspectives to create a collection of limited-edition marble objects that celebrate the material, craftsmanship, and individual expression.

At the heart of the project is the development of objects made of natural stone, which emerge from a material-based approach and offer a variety of design perspectives. The first presentation of this extraordinary collection took place during the Salone del Mobile 2026 as part of Salone Raritas – a curated platform showcasing limited editions, one-of-a-kind pieces, and high-quality design. For the format curated by Annalisa Rosso, an international selection of galleries, manufacturers, and designers was chosen to create high-contrast connections between collectible design, craftsmanship, and architectural context.

For Matera Collective, natural stone with its specific visual and structural properties serves as the starting point: the grain, color, and surface vary from piece to piece and define the individual character of each object. The editions are limited, signed, and numbered, and are created through a combination of artisanal craftsmanship and precise manufacturing techniques.

The participating designers include Ronan Bouroullec, Joep van Lieshout, Clara von Zweigbergk, Richard Hutten, and Julie Richoz, among others. The designs were limited to a maximum size of 55 centimeters; the functional requirements were deliberately left open. This resulted in works that fall somewhere between design objects and sculptural forms, each revealing a distinct creative approach.

Production takes place in collaboration with selected quarries and specialized workshops and is based on a controlled approach to resources and processes. The collaboration between the initiators combines two perspectives: Stefan Scholten shapes the design approach through a minimalist, systematic formal language, while Manuela Rotta contributes her extensive experience in working with natural stone as well as in international production contexts.

The Gallery at the Rosewood Hotel presents a contextual expansion of the exhibition, focusing on the relationship between object, material, and space.
