Midgard: AYNO Ultramarin by Stefan Diez
Clear in form, bold in color: an iconic luminaire reimagined –reduced, flexible, and sustainably conceived.
With AYNO Ultramarine, a special edition of the award-winning family of adjustable luminaires is now being introduced. The vivid ultramarine cable color was first presented at the product’s launch in January 2020 but never went into production. Now, this edition appears as a designer’s choice, bringing to life the original color vision.
AYNO represents a contemporary interpretation of Bauhaus principles: minimalist, functional, and formally reduced. Its defining feature is a slender, flexible fiberglass rod that functions without joints and can be precisely adjusted using two movable rings and the tensioned textile cable. Thanks to its natural flex, the rod always returns to its original position, referencing the historic Midgard table lamp TYP 113.
Constructed from just three materials – steel, fiberglass, and recycled ABS-PC – AYNO is designed for material efficiency and local production. With minimal resource use, a fully tool-free assembly, and long-lasting components, the luminaire embodies a consistent commitment to sustainability. The modular LED unit now also serves as the basis for a new system architecture, transferable to other luminaires in the range and even compatible with historical models, ensuring long-term usability and repairability.
New features include smart home compatibility. The table, floor, and wall versions can be operated either manually or automatically when power is restored, with a built-in memory chip that recalls the last dimming setting. Across all sizes, AYNO Ultramarine now delivers 10 watts of output, offering approximately 50 percent more brightness. This evolution enhances the luminaire’s performance while staying true to its precise, timeless design.
