April is usually a special month in the design scene, because we wouldn't actually be sitting in front our screens doing our daily business, instead we would be in Milan, on the way to the Salone del Mobile, from booth to booth, to inform ourselves, to inspire ourselves, in this shimmering, unique atmosphere that only the Milan Furniture Fair can offer. This year, for the second time, we have to forego being able to experience the product novelties in their entirety, the feel, the material. We will have to do without the many chance encounters, the exchange of ideas, the input that is so important for everyone, which otherwise accompanies us throughout the rest of the year, shows us new perspectives, challenges and excites us. This spring, we will not be able to experience any of the manufacturers' usually spectacular installations, discover works by the young generation at SaloneSatellite, visit any showroom in the city. The event hopping in the evening will be cancelled, as will the traditional Negroni in the crowd in front of the Bar Basso. This year, we will have to do without the gentle scent of the flowering Wisteria, good espresso and being able to experience Milan in the soft spring sun.
This hurts and shows us once again how important creative exchange is beyond screens and video chats. Fortunately, the Italian government is currently emphasising its confidence and has assured the Salone del Mobile.Milano of all necessary support. This raises the hope that a reunion at the Salone, which would have celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, will soon be possible again.
